Episodes of Care

Something special happens to the cost of care when all stakeholders in the care chain are linked to an episode from trigger event through to resolution.

It lowers.

Mistakes, preventable complications and care fragmentation cost the US $130 billion/ year. The first two are addressed by Affinity’s integrated information model that generally keeps healthcare departments in sync. But Affinity Decision Support’s approach to Episodes of Care tackles the scourge of Care Fragmentation head on.

Episode of Care links teams from financial and decision support, IT, payer negotiations, clinical and service lines (both inpatient and outpatient) and physician alignment so the Decision Support system can model and analyze episodes (both government and commercially defined) and deliver a clear profitability picture.

Experts in the design and build of pre-acute, acute and post-acute cost models, we’ve evolved the system to:

Give financial teams the ability to define and identify episodic relationships, monitor and model episode-based costs in existing episodic relationships

Identify and track patients across the care continuum

Distinguish between related and unrelated medical events

Leverage pre-built governmental-bundle definitions (21 total – BPCI and CJR bundles included)

Model user-defined episodic relationships such as transplant cases and series patient types

Analyze profitability, cost, resource consumption and daily utilization by phase for the continuum of care

The vaccine for low-value care is understanding cost by utilization

Our industry squanders USD $210 billion per year on “Overuse and excessive discretionary use”, according to Institute of Medicine, Best care at lower cost: The path to continuously learning health care in America, a study by the National Academy of the Sciences, 2013.

We can plug this and the rest of the egregious leaks the study sites by tracking our expenses assiduously.

Allocating expenses based on the supplies, services, resources and drugs consumed by individual patients isn’t humanly possible. So we built an AI to track actual costs.

A smart meter for health care that gives you granular insight into your department, tool, and team member usage, Utilization-based Costing brings you the promise of a smart hospital, customized and supported by wise teachers.

Good news: The same decisions that lead to healthy patients net out at healthy bottom lines.

Successful healthcare businesses have a sense of where they might find efficiencies and opportunities.

Back up your gut feelings about how your expenses actually add up with reports that aggregate and synthesize micro usage from across your healthcare business.

Get back to serving patients, not sweating financial viability.
